Portfolio Hunting With The Hounds

Bill Malkin
Bill Malkin, a Chester-based singer/songwriter, needed artwork for his new album entitled ‘Hunting With The Hounds’.
This was an open brief for me to develop. Bill’s music is generally written about local historical events or stories and with this in mind I decided to base my design around a victorian hunt. I found a great piece of art by John Sanderson-Wells called ‘Setting Out’ which I felt captured the spirit I was looking for.
Photoshop was used to retouch the image. I wanted to simplify the composition to increase the focus on the front two riders and the dogs. In the original image, the carriage and background trees were positioned next to the front rider. By retouching the image, I was able to create two complimentary compositions – the riders in one, and the following hunt enthusiasts with the carriages in the other. The original image is quite vivid, with the browns and red very strong. A more muted palette was what I was looking for and so a little colour and saturation adjustment was also made.
